The South Fork Wind Farm, located about 35 miles off the coast of Montauk, New York, is the first commercial-scale wind farm in the United States. It features 12 turbines, each rising 460 feet above the water, capable of powering 70,000 homes annually. The blades are longer than a football field, and the turbines connect to a local power grid via a subsea and underground cable. Although the U.S. aims for 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by the decade’s end, South Fork Wind represents a significant step forward for the industry.
